This site offers a tutorial to guide students into advanced research practices on the internet. If you are familiar with the net, you can skip the first section, but don't miss the remainder.

Writing Sites

• Purdue On-Line Writing Lab

This site is renowned for its completeness, but most users find it cumbersome to navigate. It offers a large collection of handouts -- mostly low-tech, plain-text documents that are easy to print out.
 
• Advice on Academic Writing.  Margaret Procter, University of Toronto.

A broad collection of writing-related resources, including links to local writing labs, and a mirror of Purdue's valuable resources.
 
• University of Toronto English Library.  Ian Lancashire et al., University of Toronto.

Mostly geared to literature.  Includes an English professor's guide to writing a college essay, a comprehensive, authoritative grammar reference (not a handbook for beginners!), and an annotated list of writing-related links.
 
• Writing Exercises in Science.  Jack Kimball, Miyazaki Medical College, Japan.

This site teaches some basic writing skills  on the following topics: Basic Points about Paragraphs; Classifying; Using Transitions; Comparing Similarities; Contrasting Differences; Cause and Effect; Giving Examples; An Afterword for the Instructor.
 
• Webster's Dictionary

Searchable database; does not contain new words like "webmaster" or "internet."

Job Search/Oral Presentation Skills

• Giving A Talk.  Frank Kschischang, University of Toronto.

A professor of engineering offers a guide to preparing and presenting technical seminars.

Although  the title is obscure, this web site contains  useful articles on professional skills you'll never learn in the engineering lab, written by a head-hunter in biotechnology. Some of the more useful for Engineering students are these:
