Language Across the Curriculum in Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto helps students to communicate in writing and orally. We work with approximately 25 courses per year to design and support written and oral assignments, offer workshops and seminars, and operate the Engineering Communication Centre. We also offer several of our own credit and non-credit courses for students in Engineering and Applied Science, designed to help with various aspects of technical communication, such as professional writing, oral presentations, and confident conversation.
At the Centre, students can get help with written and oral assignments through half-hour one-on-one appointments with one of our qualified tutors. We dont edit work but aim to teach students to write better themselves. Regular hours begin shortly after term begins, and appointments can be booked on-line.
We also provide a rich set of on-line resources for all students to use. Most of our site allows for unrestricted access. Our On-line Handbook provides guides for writing various kinds of documents and reports, guides for documenting sources using the two most popular methods in Engineering and Applied Science, advice on the writing process and writing styles, and much more. Ideally, these resources should be used in conjunction with writing instruction provided in courses and through the Centre, but they can be used independently. Always consult a tutor or instructor if you are unsure about something mentioned in the On-line Handbook. Currently, only a few of these tutorials are interactive, but we are currently developing more interactive resources for writing instruction..
