This Email is a reminder to all students about ECF procedures. 1) There is no food or drink allowed in the labs whether you are eating or drinking is of no consequence. If you bring food or drink into the labs then it must stay inside you pack or jacket. Food or drink in a container is still a violation if it is visible. THIS INCLUDES WATER. 2) No one else is allowed to use your ECF computer account. Do not tell anyone your password, and change your password if you think someone has discovered it. You are responsible for your account. 3) Every student has a print quota for each term. If you exceed this quota by 100 pages or more you will have to pay $5.00 for each 100 pages over quota. There are only 2 terms for calculating your print quota Jan-May and June-Dec. Users not paying for their excess printing will have their accounts locked. This year we are attempting to use a single quota for all printing in ECF UNIX and ECFPC. The new quota limits per term are: 1ST Year - 400 pages 2ND Year - 500 pages 3RD Year - 500 pages 4TH Year - 600 pages Graduate student ECF accounts are primarily for E-mail and access to the internet. As such they are limited to 100 page quota. Users can determine their current page count by logging into the ECF UNIX systems and running the pq command. The pq command will give you your print total since the database was last updated, which will probably be the night before. 4a) To check the print queue on the UNIX systems use the lpq command lpq -Psf1012 checks the print queue for the printer in SF1012 To removed a job from the queue use the lprm command lprm -Psf1012 job# removes the job# from the Sf1012 printer queue. To obtain the job# use the lpq command. To remove all your jobs from a queue replace the job# with your login name. lprm -Psf1012 loginname 4b) To check the print queue and/or remove jobs on the WINDOWS systems follow the following proceedure: There is an icon in the start menu. Double click on "Print Queue Viewer" 5) Every student has access to a personal web page. To create the initial web page you run the wwwinit command on the ECFUNIX systems. For more information see http://www.ecf.toronto.edu/ecf/Webpage 6) ECF does not provide a 'help' service, that is the responsibility of your department. 7) Remote access to the ECF mail server is not possible. For information about Email see http://www.ecf.toronto.edu/ecf/Mail 8) Never turn off the computers when you are done. This can damage the software on the disk. 9) There is no food or drink allowed in the labs. Abusers of this rule will have their accounts locked. Labs will be closed in the evenings and on weekends if problems persist. 10) Remote access to the ECF UNIX computers is possible with SSH for more information see http://www.ecf.toronto.edu/ecf/ssh.html 11) If you are in an ECFUNIX lab and the screen is all vertical lines and the system does not respond then you can reset the graphics by typing the 3 keys CNTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE. 12) Access to the ECFUNIX floppy drive is not possible with drag and drop due to security issues. To use the floppy drive you must use the Mtools package. For information on the Mtools package see the online manual (man mtools). 13) Repeat offenders of the ECF food and drink policy could have their account locked indefinitely. 14) Your ECF account is for academic purposes. Users abusing their ECF account may face sanctions under various University codes of conduct or even face criminal charges. 15) Reinstatement of accounts locked for food/drink violations requires authorization from your Department Chair. 16) Hotmail account holders that forward their Email from ECF to their Hotmail address should be aware of hotmail mailbox size limitations that may result in dropped Email messages. 17) Hotmail account holders that set the "Junk Mail Filter" to "high" and the "Junk Mail Deletion" set to "Immediate Deletion" will not receive Email from ECF. 18) Problems with equipment in ECF labs such as jammed printers or broken mice/keyboards/floppy drives should be reported to ECF STAFF by sending E-mail to trouble@ecf for UNIX labs or ecfpc@ecf for WINDOWS labs. In the E-mail try to be as specific as possible identifying the affected equipment so that we can fix the problem. If it is not reported, it will not get fixed in a timely fashion. 19) Users should not keep old Email in their INBOX or mail spool file. Please delete all unnecessary Email and save important Email to a file/folder. 20) Grad 'course' accounts only last the duration of the course, usually one term, at which point they are terminated. Grads should save any files they want to keep before the 'course' account is disabled. 21) All students are encouraged to get a permanent E-mail address outside ECF. Your ECF E-mail address disappears when you are nolonger a registered Engineering student. This is especially important to graduating students that job hunt using E-mail. Once you graduate your account will disappear, so don't give your ECF E-mail address as a contact point when job hunting. There are many E-mail servers available (rogers, bell sympatico, hotmail) UtorMail is available see the UofT web page or go to the Robarts Library. For more information see the ECF web site http://www.ecf.toronto.edu/ecf
