University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering Calendar 2000 - 2001 International Student Exchanges The International Student Exchange Office administers university-wide international and Canadian exchanges for University of Toronto students. The exchange programs offer students a variety of opportunities to study at partner institutions while gaining an understanding of different cultures, heritage, values and lifestyles found across borders. Exchange programs operate under formal agreements between the University of Toronto and partner universities abroad and in Canada. University of Toronto students who participate in exchange programs will pay full-time tuition and compulsory incidental fees to the University of Toronto. Students can then study at one of the University of Toronto’s partner universities without paying tuition fees at the host university. The following exchange programs are available through

Clarice Chalmers' Design Lectures During the Winter Session of each year a series of lectures, entitled the Clarice Chalmers’ Design Lectures are scheduled within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering on Engineering Education. The lectures are held weekly from 12:00noon -1:00pm on Thursdays and will commence in the 1999/2000 academic year on January 20th, 2000 through to the end of March, 2000, except for Reading Week. The location for all lectures is Room MC102 in the Mechanical Engineering Building. All students are very welcome to attend to gain a greater appreciation of the importance of engineering design to their career development. The Design Lectures are given by a select group of individuals from academe, industry and government with a keen interest in design education and its value to our industrial and information based economy. The lectures address many facets of the design process, its relation to manufacturing and materials; the value of teamwork, safety and health issues, intellectual property and ethics, all presented in the context of a real engineering environment. These lectures are sponsored by Mrs. Clarice Chalmers and are dedicated to the memory of the 14 women killed at Ecole Polytechnique on December 6th, 1989. The coordination of this lecture series is undertaken by the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. In recent years students were given the opportunity, though this Lecture Series, to hear the views and to benefit from the experiences of many outstanding design engineers and practising professionals in related disciplines, some of whom are identified below together with the title of their presentation: Dr. Hart Katz of DVX, Toronto, on the Trials and Tribulations of bringing Medical Products to the Market. Paul G. Schurter, P. Eng., Manager- Analysis, Design and Testing Group, Market Development & Product Applications of Dofasco, Hamilton, on Designing the All Steel Light-weight Automotive Frame. Monique Frize, Ph.D., O.C., NSERC Women’s Chair, on Engineering Design: Team Work, Know and Respect the Members. Thomas Brzustowski, Ph.D., P.Eng., President, NSERC, on Engineering Design: Is it Innovation? Louis Bialy, P.Eng., Director, Codes & Products Safety, Otis Elevator, United Technologies, on Design Safety: Vertical People Movers. Students across the Campus are encouraged to attend these lectures as they provide a valuable insight to the engineering profession as well as the opportunity to meet leading practising professional engineers. Students thinking of participating in the Professional Experience Year (PEY) Program will find the series to be of particular interest. Back to Curriculum and Programs
