The Jeffrey Skoll B.A.SC./ MBA Program, The Skoll Program

The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto are working to establish and plan to formally announce the Jeffrey Skoll B.A.Sc. /MBA Program in 2000, once all approvals within the University of Toronto and the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies have been secured. In anticipation of all approvals being secured by June, 2000, the pertinent details about the program, specifically as it relates to eligibility and application dates in 2000 and 2001 are outlined below.

1. Structure of the Skoll Program:
The proposed Skoll Program will enable students to complete all requirements for a B.A.Sc (Engineering) degree as well as all requirements for a Masters degree in Business Administration. The program is anticipated to be of six years duration (seven with PEY) and will include a mandatory full-time work experience within a structured internship program, to be identified as the Management Experience Year, MEY. The proposed structure, subject to approval of the University of Toronto and The Ontario Council of Graduate Studies is presented below. Students who successfully complete the Skoll Program will receive both the BASc. and MBA degrees.

Year one: fall  Regular B.A.Sc. program
winter Regular B.A.Sc. program
Year two: fall Regular B.A.Sc. program
winter Regular B.A.Sc. program
summer summer work experience
Option: PEY following 2nd Year

Year three: fall  Regular B.A.Sc. program
winter Regular B.A.Sc. program
summer MEY with Industry
[PEY Students exempt from this 4 month MEY only]
Year four: fall  Regular B.A.Sc. program, with adjustments
winter MEY with Industry continues
summer MEY with Industry continues
Year five: fall  5 MBA courses
winter 5 MBA courses
summer Management Placement (competitive)
Year six: fall 5 MBA courses

All Management credits in Year 5 and 6 are shown underlined.

Students are still encouraged to participate in either the 2nd or 3rd year PEY Option; such participation will extend the Skoll Program by one year, but all students will certainly benefit substantially from the PEY experience.

2. Enrolment in the Skoll Program:
Enrolment in the Skoll Program will be limited. Students in all engineering programs within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering will be eligible to apply in the third year of their engineering program once the program is established.
Note: Students applying for admission to the University of Toronto cannot apply for admission into the B.A.Sc./MBA since admission into this specialized program will only be considered when students are in their third year of study at the University of Toronto.

3. Admission Requirements:
The regular application form required by the Rotman School of Management will be used by all engineering students seeking admission into the Skoll Program. The key requirements for admission are summarized below in point form.

  1. B+ Grade Average: A minimum B+, i.e. 77%, average in each of the four terms (2F, 2W, 3F, and 3W) is required for students to be eligible.
  2. GMAT: All students will be required to do the GMAT. Attention will be given to the quantitative, verbal and writing components of the GMAT score as well as to the total score. See website: www.gmat.org
  3. Resume: A Resume of the student.
  4. Experience Profile: An Experience Profile of the student.
  5. References: Three Letters, based on the format used by the School of Management.
  6. Interview: Applicants will be interviewed.
  7. Essays: There will be an essay requirement similar to that required on the Rotman School of Management Application Form. These requirements will be available by March 30, 2000.
4. Application dates in 2000 and 2001:
  1. The application date in 2000 is June 15th, 2000. In this pilot year, only those students enrolled in any one of the nine Engineering Programs and any option within these Engineering Programs, who have completed third year by May, 2000 and who will have completed a PEY by August, 2000 will be eligible to apply. This restriction will apply only in the first year of the Skoll Program. Successful applicants would be accepted into the Skoll Program by September 1st, 2000, and would, following participation in the MEY internship, commence the MBA Program in September 2001, graduating in June 2003.
  2. The application date in 2001 is January 15th, 2001. All third year engineering students, with or without PEY, as well as students who will have completed third year in 2000 and who are currently on PEY would be eligible to apply. Successful applicants would be conditionally accepted into the Skoll Program by February 21st, 2001, and would, following participation in the MEY internship, commence the MBA Program in September 2002, graduating in June 2004.
5. Tuition, Placement Fees: In years five and six students will be enrolled in the Rotman School of Management with a corresponding change in tuition fees. These fees are considerably higher than the tuition fees within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Placement fees for the MEY Program will be equivalent to the placement fees used in the PEY Program. All tuition and placement fees are subject to approval of the University of Toronto.

6. Students Planning Ahead:

  1. Further details about the Skoll Program will be available through the Registrars Office and the PEY Office in late March, 2000, well ahead of the June 15th, 2000 application date.
  2. Students who are interested in the Skoll Program are encouraged to investigate and complete the GMAT as soon as possible [see www.gmat.org].
  3. Students who are accepted into the Skoll Program will be advised by their respective Undergraduate Student Counsellors to ensure that they complete the required set of courses in 4F, consistent with the guidelines of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, CEAB
