Univeristy of Toronto
Message From The Dean I am very pleased to have the opportunity to welcome all new and returning students including all those from out-of-province and from other countries. You have joined a Faculty which has a proud history in its origins as the School of Practical Science established in 1873 and which now offers a very rich undergraduate learning experience linked to an exceptionally strong research enterprise. The performance of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering is a significant component in the ranking of the University of Toronto as Canada's top research intensive university by Maclean's magazine for five consecutive years. We have a reputation for producing leaders in the profession, the corporate sector and public institutions. In 1998, we celebrated 125 years of excellence in engineering education. This Calendar provides you with a formal statement of the curriculum in each of the nine undergraduate programs that are offered by the Faculty, information on scholarships and financial aid, and the policies and procedures related to term-by-term promotion. Our programs evolve on a continuing basis to reflect advances in the various branches of engineering and the level of preparedness of students entering First Year. University discipline codes - both the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters and the Code of Student Conduct related to non-academic activities - are included. All students should make themselves aware of these Codes and avoid committing an offence which could lead to a major sanction, including suspension. In particular, I have to caution all students that cases of plagiarism will not be tolerated in any course; nor will the use of computer facilities for non-academic purposes. Students entering First Year should know that, although you have accepted a place in one of the nine programs, the Vice-Dean and Chair of First Year - Professor Will Cluett has overall responsibility for the First Year curriculum and related matters, including the welcome and orientation. The First Year office is located in Room 157 in the Galbraith Building. Any First Year student needing help or advice should not hesitate to speak to Professor Cluett or his assistant. Upper year students should contact their undergraduate program offices for help and advice related to their program. The student services section of the Office of the Registrar in the Galbraith Building is also available for advice on a wide range of other questions. The Faculty is committed to providing the best possible undergraduate education and training consistent with its resources. I am personally committed to working hard to introduce improvements in the undergraduate experience and I would welcome feedback from students and parents at any time. I wish you all a successful year.
Michael E. Charles Dean
