Energenius invest $6 million to nanotechnology research |
|
With an initial commitment of more than $6 million,
Energenius Inc., a
globally focused research and development company based in
Toronto, has created North America's first centre for advanced nanotechnology.
The Energenius Centre for Advanced Nanotechnology builds on a
productive and mutually beneficial research partnership between the
company and Prof Harry Ruda, leader of the Electronic Materials
Group in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science.
Prof. Ruda, named founding director and first holder of the Energenius chair in Advanced Nanotechnology, says the Centre will develop "the critical mass of researchers required to put us on the leading edge of research in this field." Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field for designing, fabricating and applying nanometre-scale materials, structures and devices. The technology is one step beyond microelectronics in the reduction of the size of electronic units. The mandate of the Centre is to promote education and research in the field and accelerate advances in nanotechnology research. The Centre will focus specifically on developing manufacturing technologies for nano-scale devices. The major, ground-breaking advances in advanced nanotechnology are being made now and will accelerate rapidly over the next five years. Because the industry is still in an early development stage, there are many critical issues to be resolved. With support from an advisory council of representatives from several universities and industry, the Energenius Centre will create consortia to fund research into these issues. "The Energenius Centre for Advanced Nanotechnology will foster research and education in this field and provide students wit" access to some of the most advanced research equipment in the world," observes Energenius President Stanley Meek. For more information, please contact Prof. Harry Ruda at (416) 978-4556, fax (416) 978-4155, email: ruda@ecf.utoronto.ca or visit the Centre's web site: http://www.utoronto.ca/~ecan. |
