A Departmental and Faculty milestone was reached this year when over 50% of the students who completed their degree requirements in May were female. The incoming first year class is also 51% female, continuing the trend to a gender-balanced branch of engineering,

Our Pulp and Paper Research Centre, under the Directorship of Professor Doug Reeve, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The Centre has grown to accommodate 55 graduate students. Doug will be the recipient of an honourary doctorate from the University of Helsinki in November,1997.

The Department is a co-founder of the new Environmental Analytical Teaching Laboratory (ANALEST) located in the Lash Miller Building. We will be teaching Collaborative Environmental Engineering students in this facility, which will also be used by our graduate students.

Professors David Barham and M. Jane Phillips retired June 30, 1996. Jane was a previous Associate Chair of Graduate Studies and a Past President of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. Professors Elizabeth Edwards and Christopher Yip have joined the Department; their research interests are in bioremediation of soils by microorganisms, and the characterization of biological surfaces by atomic force microscopy, respectively.

Awards

Undergraduate Students

Pratima Ramkhelawan, Meredith Gonsko, Sevana Yousefian, Briana Wong, Eddie Wu and Stephen Sweeney placed second in the Corporate Design category of the Ontario Engineering Design Competition. The team then went on to win first place at the National Competition.

Tanya Lindsay won a Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award for 1997.

Graduate Students

Morteza Baghalha received an award from the Hydrometallurgy Section of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.

Staff

Will Cluett selected as the 1997 winner of the Syncrude Canada Innovation Award.
Kim Woodhouse awarded the PEO Engineering Excellence Award.
Honghi Tran awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Merit from the Engineering Division of TAPPI.
Molly Shoichet received a 1997 IUPAC Travel Award.
