About the CentreInteractive Online HandbookCoursesOnline Booking

Interactive internet-based technologies provide a unique learning opportunity for students because they demand a level of student attention and provide appropriate and timely feedback. This section of the site is still largely under development, but we hope to have more tutorials and tools available soon.

Some of these tutorials may require certain browsers (Javascipt enabled or certain versions) or plug-ins (such as Flash or Shockwave). These requirements will be specified below.

If you have any suggestions for this part of the web-site, please don’t hesitate to contact us: writing@ecf.utoronto.ca

Abstract Tutorial:
This tutorial requires the student to read and assess four separate abstracts and provides commentary on your choices. It asks the student to consider the reasons for their rankings, then compare their rationale to the tutorial's detailed commentary on what each abstract does effectively and/or poorly. It also provides the opportunity for students to submit their own abstract on-line for evaluation by tutors in the Engineering Communication Centre.

Bibliography Builder:
This Javascript application takes submitted bibliographic information (such as author, title, year, pages, etc.) and returns a bibliographical entry for Author-Date (Chicago Manual of Style) or IEEE styles. It also provides localized help on documentation practices in the two formats and forms part of our handbook pages on documentation

Requirements: Javascript enabled browser

Plagiarism Self-Test: Take a test to see whether or not you recognize when or if plagiarism has occurred. Part of our pages on documentation.

Why Document?: See the correct answer to the question "Is it ethical of me to use the exact words of another author in my own work?" Part of our pages on documentation.

Cybertutor:
This form allows students in Engineering to submit questions (anything from general inquiries to specific questions about assignments) or writing samples (outlines, introductions, rough drafts) on-line to tutors in the Engineering Communication Centre. Responses should take no longer than 1-2 days, except in busy periods (end-of-term).
